Welcome to our newsletter coming out on a different day this time around - as we didn't want it getting lost in the long weekend! Last week we had Donatella doing her first class visit in Kikorangi. She already knows the school through her sister Courtney and brother Leevy, but it was great to have her here in class for the first time.

Over the last few newsletters, I have explained our four values. This time I will share our vision statement, which is a famous whakatauki/proverb: Poipoia te kākano, kia puāwai - Nurture the seed and it will flourish.

This encapsulates our approach to teaching and learning here at Nukumea. We focus on creating a nurturing environment, where students feel safe, cared for and healthy. Then they are able to really progress in their learning, with the support of their wonderful teachers. We are already seeing this take place. Over the first term and a half, our community here at school have supported and cared for each other, helping each other to learn. The learning progress of our children has been fantastic so far and we are now starting to share regular snap shots of their learning through Hero. Thanks to the parents who were able to make the Hero information session where you also got a sneak peek of what reports will look like. If you missed this session, it was recorded and this link was shared on Hero so you can watch it at any time.

We hope you've all had an opportunity to view your child's learning content on Hero. Teachers have been busy creating posts to give you an insight in to what's been happening in the classroom. We'd love you to take the time to leave a comment or give it a 'like'. A reminder learning content will be turned off at the beginning of Week 9 (Monday 19th June) to allow teachers to start populating the report page. This will be available to view on Friday 30th June. Learning Conferences will be happening in Term 3; more information to come.

Last week, we were onsite having a look at Reception, Health Room and the meeting room spaces to plan out any furniture needed for these rooms. The exciting part of this visit though, was seeing the courts being rolled out and prepped. Another exciting step forward towards completion!

The current practical completion date for our buildings is looking like late August. This means the Board, Staff and Ministry officials are all now planning for whether this means we can move in late Term 3 or for the start of Term 4. We look forward to confirming our move in date with you all by the end of this month.

Board Meeting Dates This Term

  • Tuesday June 27th

The meetings are at school and run from 5:30-7:30pm. Please feel free to come along and if you have any questions about this, please talk to Steve at school or email him on stevem@nukumea.school.nz

One of the core principles of The Resilience Project is Empathy.

Working on empathy helps us to identify, understand and feel what another person is feeling. When we show empathy, or we do something kind for someone else our brain releases oxytocin. This leads to increasing our self-esteem/confidence, energy levels, positivity and overall happiness.

One family challenge that The Resilience Project recommends for building empathy, is to choose a neighbour in need of some kindness. Then as a family, complete an act of kindness for that neighbour. This could be anything from baking for them, offering to complete a job for them or inviting them over for afternoon tea.

On Thursday, June 29th at 6pm, we will be hosting our very first Matariki Celebration here at Nukumea Primary School.

As this is very much a school community celebration, we would like to invite you to contribute in a few different ways. The questions in the form below describe these different contributions. As much as is possible, please answer these as it will mean a great deal in our continued planning for this event.

We hope you all get to enjoy a few days of sunshine over the rest of this week!
